Stargazing in Pembrokeshire with your very own astronomer!
Take a tour of the night sky, viewing familiar and unfamiliar constellations of the northern hemisphere, find various deep sky objects and enjoy the wonderful Milky Way all whislt learning the correct use of binoculars and navigation via star maps. You will also be shown how to set up a telescope correctly before viewing and then photographing some of the magnificent sights in the night sky. No prior knowledge or equipment needed, but feel free to bring both!

Need to Know
The evening is restricted to a small group of max 8 per astronomer and the start time varies according to the time of year to ensure darkness. We generally hold the evenings in the region of SA71 5DR or within a couple of miles. Bookings can be taken for special bespoke group sessions, with the Astronomer travelling to you if requested and if the site is suitable. There are provisions to ensure that even if the weather is a little unaccommodating there will still be opportunities to use the equipment and learn about the skies, but there is a risk of the activity being cancelled in the event of forecast gales or predicted cloud cover. In this instance we will contact you in advance, but please retain your voucher/s as arrangements can be made for you to rearrange for a future date, exchange for an alternative Dark Sky Wales Stargazing Evening, or we can refund less a 10% booking fee.

An Evening with Col. Al. Worden Command Module Pilot, Apollo 15 @ Aberdare Coliseum

Dark Sky Wales is honoured to announce that with support from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council it will be hosting Colonel Al Worden Command Module Pilot for Apollo 15 at Aberdare Coliseum on October 9th, 2017. The evening will be MC’d by Nick Howes director of Aerolite Europe and former science writer for the ESA – European Space Agency.

“I highly recommend meeting Al Worden!  His personality, friendliness and energy made his memories come alive. I felt as though I had been to the Moon with him!”

Tickets will be on sale from July 4th, priced at £17.50 from the Box Office or via the website www.rct-arts.co.uk. Demand is expected to be high so please book early.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see one of only 24 men to have gone to Moon.

Spanish Observatory Tour @ Griffin Observatory

Join Dark Sky Wales astronomers as they team up with Griffon Observatory to provide a truly wonderful stargazing experience. Set in the Grazzelma National Park, Andalucia the Griffon Observatory offers fantastic vista of the night sky amid traditional spanish culture. By day explore the wonders of the National Park and by night gaze upon the cosmos from a warm climate. Shirt sleeve astronomy at its best.

Dark Sky Wales staff will meet you at Malaga airport and transport you to the quaint village of El Bosque. Here you will be introduced to your accomodation for your long weekend and staff from the observatory. Observations begin after an early evening meal and last until the early hours of the morning when you will be driven back to your accomodation. Saturday is left open for you to explore the local area (guide books will be provided by staff) before meeting up at 7pm for that evenings observing. Sunday afternoon is set aside for solar observing (this is optional at no extra cost) and staff will collect you at 2pm for a 2 hour observing session before returning you to your accomodation. Evening observing will again begin at 7pm and finish at midnight allowing you to get a good nights sleep before being transported back to Malaga Airport on Monday morning.

Transport from Malaga airport to the observatory, accomodation and observatory fees are included in the price.

Places are limited to 10 and we are expecting interest to be high so please book early to avoid disappointment.

A unique opportunity for you to be part of a small group of 15 like minded individuals enjoying the dark skies of Wales. On the eveing you will be accompanied by two astronomers who will guide you around the night sky from constellations to nebula, learning the mythology and science of astronomy. No experience needed just an enthusiasm to learn more about the night sky and why not bring a camera or use ours to record your experience.
All astronomical equipment is provided but please wrap up warm as the mountain can become very cold.
